About Us

Using Music to Bridge and Promote the Crucial Role of Fathers in Their Children's Lives

We drew inspiration from the powerful story told by the classic Motown song, “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.” Our initiative uses the arts, particularly music, as a bridge to explore and promote the crucial role of fathers in their children's lives. On August 27, 2022, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the song’s release during Detroit Bass Day at the Motown Museum, where 50 bassists played the iconic bass line on the museum plaza. This event highlighted the deep emotional resonance of the song, which became the foundation of our project.

Rooted in Detroit’s rich musical heritage, we are committed to fostering a global understanding of positive fatherhood. Through storytelling and cultural engagement, we aim to challenge and reshape the narrative around fathering. Our vision is to create a world where every father is recognized for their unique role in the family, and where the stories of their struggles and successes are shared and valued. By drawing on the emotional depth of music and culture, we help fathers reflect on their experiences and empower them to build stronger relationships with their children.

We at The Papa Was Project are dedicated to spreading this message far and wide, touching the lives of fathers and families everywhere. We invite you to join us in this journey of transformation, using the universal language of music to connect, heal, and strengthen the bonds between fathers and their children.
